Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Antonio Valencia will stay as his first-choice right-back next season, despite the arrival of £12.7m Matteo Darmian from Torino.

Speaking at his press conference in America, where the club are on a pre-season tour, Van Gaal said:

"On last year's US tour I had to line up the players in positions different to what they are used to playing which is not good.

"Now for every position I have two players.

"Normally they play in their own position but nevertheless Paddy McNair had to play right full back in the first tour game and that is not his position.

"He can do it but it's not his position and that is football because Antonio Valencia was injured.

"We have brought Darmian for the second position behind Valencia and now already because of that injury, McNair has to play there."

The 25-year-old Darmian has made 13 appearances for the Italy national team, and many assumed he would immediately become the first choice right-back at United, especially with the Brazilian Rafael on his way to Galatasaray.
