England dropping Rooney is not my problem, says Mourinho

There are no winners in Evans rape case

Ince: Lose against United and you've let everyone down

Will Leicester ever dediscover their winning touch?

The key questions facing the big six this weekend

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday that Wayne Rooney being dropped by England as well as Manchester United was not his problem but that the player was positive ahead of Monday’s match at Liverpool.

In a testy press conference during which he was reluctant to engage with most of the questions, Mourinho was asked if he felt it had been a difficult period for Rooney. “That’s not my problem. England’s not my problem,” he said. Asked about the 30-year-old’s current mental state, he added: “He is good he is prepared, he is training well and is positive.”

Good morning and welcome to The Independent as the Premier League comes hurtling back into our lives after a week of international football. We'll leave it to your judgement as to whether that's a good thing or not. Champions Leicester City make the trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before an almost full fixture of Premier League matches take place across the country.

It's a sombre day at Stamford Bridge...

Riyad Mahrez is on the Leicester City substitutes' bench for the first time since October 2015. It's one of three changes made by Claudio Ranieri, but the Italian has explained his reasoning ahead of kick-off this afternoon...

40 mins: Another thumping free-kick from long range by David Luiz has Schmeichel panicked, but the Leicester goalkeeper just about managed to get his body in the way to punch clear the danger. The home side are enjoying this rather one-sided contest.

45 mins: As one minute extra is signalled by the fourth official, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa combine again to open up the Leicester defence. However, the Belgian's return pass in a slick one-two is too heavy for the striker and the opportunity of a third before the break slips away.

HALF-TIME - CHELSEA 2 LEICESTER 0:

64 mins: David Luiz hits the woodwork again! Only this time it's his own post. The Brazilian's attempt to cut out a sharp Marc Albrighton cross from the right before Jamie Vardy poked home was far too close for Chelsea comfort. However, the defenders somehow got away with it. Job done for now.

KICK-OFF: We're up and away!

8 mins: GOAL! STOKE 1 SUNDERLAND 0:

The goal machine does it again! Joe Allen has his fourth in four games for club and country after the Welshman arrived at the right time to head home Marko Arnautovic's delicate cross from the left touchline. Sunderland has started very well, but now find themselves behind in a between the only two sides in the Premier League without a win this season.
