Manchester United injury news: Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phil Jones and Matteo Darmian remain sidelined in injury crisis

United have the second most injuries in the Premier League and will no welcome any player back for the visit of Stoke to Old Trafford

Manchester United will not have any of their injured first-team members available for Tuesday night’s visit with Stoke as Louis van Gaal looks to gain revenge for the 2-0 Boxing Day defeat at the Britannia.

Stoke stunned United when they met in late 2015 in a match that came amid serious doubts over Van Gaal’s future at Old Trafford. Despite the Dutchman still in the job, he finds himself under a similar level of pressure to improve United’s performances as well as their form, but he will have to do so with a number of injured players unavailable for the match.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian and Phil Jones all remain sidelined and will miss the encounter with the Potters, although the latter two could return in time to face Chelsea on Sunday.

However, Schweinsteiger is now not expected to feature until the end of the month, and he is joined by a number of long-term absentees that have led to a defensive crisis at United. Marcos Rojo continues to recover from a dislocated shoulder, while Ashley Young – who has featured on both flanks in defence as well as in a midfield role, is sidelined indefinitely after undergoing groin surgery.

He is joined by Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia, who have not played a minute of football in 2016 and will be lucky to play again this season. Valencia had an operation on an ankle injury towards the end of last year, while Shaw is recovering from a double leg fracture he suffered in September.

However, there was good news on Monday when Shaw returned to the club’s Carrington training base to step up his rehabilitation efforts and could yet make a return before the end of the Premier League season in May.

United will hope to make up for the Boxing Day defeat in which forwards Bojan Krkic and Marko Arnautvic scored that dealt Van Gaal a fourth straight defeat in December.
