Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is set to return to training next week but remains unlikely to play again this season.

The England international, who has been mooted as a late contender for Roy Hodgson’s European Championships England squad, suffered a horrific double leg fracture in his side’s Champions League group stage defeat to PSV Eindhoven last September.

Shaw will be permitted to train outside from Monday but, according to Louis van Gaal, the 20-year-old faces an uphill struggle to regain full fitness before the date of the FA Cup final in May.

“Luke Shaw will be back on the training pitch on Monday with the physio,” said the United manager, speaking at his press conference ahead of Sunday’s home game against Everton.

Club captain Wayne Rooney remains unavailable for the meeting with his former club but is recovering well from a knee injury which has kept him out of action since February.

“He’s doing great,” said Van Gaal. “He trained today at a lower level with the ball and will probably play an Under-21s match before he comes back.”

Ander Herrera and Ashley Young’s respective returns to first-team action were also confirmed by the Dutchman but Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has a similar injury to Rooney, remains some time away from a full recovery.
