Man United: Just how bad is their start to the season?

Manchester United ended Liverpool's 100 percent start to the Premier League season -- and their 17 match winning streak -- with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

But there was disappointment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side who were five minutes away from a win before Liverpool substitute Adam Lallana grabbed an equaliser for the league leaders to cancel out Marcus Rashford's 36th minute opener.

United are now unbeaten in their last seven home games against Liverpool, whose lead over second-placed Manchester City is cut to six points.

Rashford scored after turning home a superb low cross from Dan James after the speedy Welshman had broken down the right flank.

The goal was subject to a video review and allowed to stand despite Liverpool claims that Victor Lindelof had fouled Divock Origi at the start of the move.

Liverpool thought they had got level, two minutes before the interval, when Sadio Mane outfought Lindelof and poked home but the VAR review showed the Senegalese forward had handled the ball.

But Juergen Klopp's side, who had struggled to find openings, finally broke through in the 85th minute when Lallana slotted home Andy Robertson's low cross.

The news is far more positive for Liverpool in the goalkeeper department. Alisson Becker is set to return from injury and should replace Adrian.

Joel Matip is also expected to be restored to the starting XI having recovered from a calf injury. But there is no Mohamed Salah, who picked up a knock against Leicester before the international break.

Prediction

Liverpool should have too much for an out of form, depleted United side, but it’s unlikely to be the easy victory some expect.

Hello and welcome to the Independent's live coverage of Manchester United vs Liverpool in the Premier League this afternoon!

We'll have all the buildup and team news here ahead of kick-off at 4.30pm.

This is a crucial game for both teams, for very different reasons. Liverpool, with victory here, would make it 19 Premier League wins in a row and nine from nine this season.

They would extend their lead over Manchester City to eight points, too, and make another statement of intent.

For Manchester United, things are becoming desperate. They sit in 14th following yesterday's games, with just nine points to their name.

A win here over their historic rivals might spark a turnaround. But few are backing United to win this one.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken a sly dig at Liverpool, referencing their Premier League title drought in the buildup to today's game.

“I’m sure we will bounce back and win the league and sure it won’t be 30 years until the next Premier League that we do win," he said.

"For this next game, you never take a draw when you’re at Man United. I want to go out there and get three points. We need to start winning games, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing Liverpool, Manchester City or Brighton.

“A good performance and result can change the players’ and mood and perception of themselves.

“Maybe they haven’t believed they are good enough and when you lack confidence you think twice instead of acting on instinct. Because I know these players are good enough, no worries about that.”

Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, has insisted there will be no complacency from his side.

“People are trying to create it as a banana skin,” he said. “They are trying to make it as we’re the team and they are nobody.

“That we are so good, and they have so many problems. They cannot play football any more, we are flying.

“Sky [Sports] made a combined line-up and had 11 Liverpool players. That’s like a joke. The world in the moment is a circus, and we are at the centre.

“[Solskjaer and United] said that we are the perfect opponent now. I don’t think there are a lot of teams who would love to play us at the moment. It looks like Manchester United are the only ones who want us. We have to make sure that is a misunderstanding."

United will be without both David de Gea and Paul Pogba today, which is likely to make their task even more difficult.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have yet to confirm whether Mohamed Salah is fit to start after he picked up a knock against Leicester. But they are expected to welcome back Allison and Joel Matip this afternoon.

It seems David de Gea might in fact start for United. Solskjaer ruled him out of contention on Thursday but the Spaniard was spotted with the squad last night and could still be involved.

That would be a big boost for the hosts.
