Jose Mourinho has been granted an extension by the Football Association to respond to a charge of using ‘abusive, insulting or improper language’ after allegedly swearing into a television camera.

Mourinho will, therefore, be on the touchline for Manchester United’s trip to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunch-time.

The United manager was originally required to respond before 6.00pm on Friday if he wished to appeal the charge but, on United’s request, the deadline has been extended to the same time on Wednesday evening.

Mourinho confirmed that the club had spoken to English football’s governing body at his Friday pre-match press conference but he refused to discuss the incident at length for fear of further sanction.

“If I answer to your question I probably have another process because I cannot imply bias so my answer is no answer,” he said, when asked whether he felt he was being ‘victimised’ by the FA.

Mourinho is alleged to have sworn in Portuguese into a television camera following United’s 3-2 comeback victory over Newcastle United earlier this month.

The FA charged Mourinho with “abusive and/or insulting and/or improper” on Tuesday. The United manager could face a warning, a fine or a touchline ban as punishment.

United meet Chelsea, Mourinho’s former club, at Stamford Bridge in a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday.
