Casemiro insists Paul Pogba would be “very welcome” at Real Madrid after recent speculation linking the Manchester United midfielder with a move this summer.

The France international would not comment on the rumours after the 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.

But the Brazilian midfielder has heaped praise on Pogba, describing him as a “great person,” encouraging him to move to La Liga.

“A player of his level is compatible with any player in the world. We know he is a great player, but we cannot talk about a player who is not here with the team,” Casemiro said.

“We know that if he comes to Madrid he will be very welcome because we know he is a great player.

“He has another very important match in the Champions [League] and he is thinking about that game. He is a great person and we have to respect him and respect Manchester [United].”

Pogba was unable to inspire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side against Lionel Messi and co., and emphasised his focus on United despite speculation.

“I am not going to respond to this,” he said. “I only talk about the match, not about other things.

“It’s always a dream to play in the Champions League against a team like Barça. Today we lost but next week we have to win.”

And the 26-year-old is hopeful United can pull off a comeback much like their last 16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

“We saw a team we can beat,” the midfielder said. “If you don’t believe that then you just let them go through. We believe we can beat them.

“We are Manchester United. They are Barcelona but we are Manchester United and we play in the Champions League like they do and we can go through of course.

“We are 1-0 down and now go to the Nou Camp but we believe chances will come over there. We have to keep believing.

“It is a Champions League game and we know we can hurt them as well as they can hurt us.”
