Manchester United vs Chelsea player ratings as Reece James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka shine in stalemate

The weather caused problems for both teams, with the Red Devils still winless at Old Trafford

Manchester United played out a dull draw with Chelsea on a rain-soaked evening at Old Trafford.

The Blues dominated a woeful first half, although Marcus Rashford spurned a brilliant chance as he was denied by Edouard Mendy.

The second half was much of the same story, as defenders trumped attackers as both sides failed to convince with some uninspiring football.

Edinson Cavani made his debut off the bench and almost scored with his first touch as a Manchester United player, but his effort went the wrong side of the post.

The result leaves United winless through three home games in the Premier League and just outside the bottom five, whilst Chelsea lie in sixth.

Manchester United

David de Gea – 6. The Spaniard had little to do in either half, despite Chelsea’s dominance of possession.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8. The right back made some key tackles in the first period, and dealt with the threat of Werner, Pulisic and Chilwell brilliantly.

Victor Lindelof – 7. A solid performance from the Swede, who didn’t put a foot wrong as he kept Werner quiet.

Harry Maguire – 6. The England centre-back played some impressive forward passes, and was solid at the back although he was lucky to not concede a penalty for manhandling Azpilicueta late in the first half.

Luke Shaw – 5. Booked for a foul on Reece James, and seemed to be caught out of position several times.

Fred – 4. The Brazilian was incredibly wasteful in possession, and struggled to impact the game. He was completely outperformed by Jorginho, and was booked early in the second half for a foul on Havertz.

Scott McTominay – 5. He barely touched the ball in the first half, and the second period wasn’t much kinder to the Scot.

Daniel James – 4. The winger was completely anonymous in the first half, marked out the game by a combination of James and Azpilicueta.

Juan Mata – 6. He was quiet for much of the game, but perhaps should have had an assist when he played in Rashford. Mata was denied a goal against his former club by a nice Mendy save.

Bruno Fernandes – 5. Fired straight at Mendy when he found some space in the first half, but horribly anonymous in the second half. Not his night.

Marcus Rashford – 6. The striker should have done better when he fired right at Mendy, but picked up a knock from Thiago Silva late in the first half. United looked most threatening when he was played in behind.

Substitutes:

Paul Pogba – 6.

Edinson Cavani – 6. The Uruguayan almost scored with his first touch as a United player when his flick hit the side-netting.

Mason Greenwood – 6.

Chelsea

Edouard Mendy – 6. Almost passed the ball into his own net after half an hour, but made a great save to deny Rashford before another smart save from a Mata effort. His distribution appears to be an issue.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7. The Spaniard played nice forward passes and looked comfortable alongside Thiago Silva.

Thiago Silva – 7. The Brazilian was defensively sound throughout, although there were penalty appeals for his challenge on Rashford as the first half ended.

Kurt Zouma – 6. The Frenchman appears to have forged a strong relationship with Thiago Silva, but he had little to do at Old Trafford.

Reece James – 8. A scrappy performance, James was willing to track back and defend as willingly as he was to get forward. Almost set up a goal in the second half.

Jorginho – 6. Another impressive performance from the Italian. He commanded the midfield in the first half, ticking things over for the Blues as Chelsea dominated possession. However, he was non-existent in the second half.

N’Golo Kante – 6. The Frenchman offered an attacking threat at times in the first half, showing a willingness to get forward, but was much less influential in the second period.

Ben Chilwell – 5. He always provided a wide outlet for Chelsea down the left, and played a fantastic ball to Havertz midway through the first half. He was nowhere to be seen in the second half.

Kai Havertz – 5. Booked for a foul as United looked to counter, and he was generally disappointing. Replaced by Mount.

Timo Wener – 4. The German forward offered very little despite Chelsea dominating the first half, and was substituted for Abraham.

Christian Pulisic – 6. The American got off to a poor start, but started to find his feet in the first half and robbed Fred in possession to fire a deflected shot wide. Almost got on the end of an exceptional cross from Reece James.
