Harry Kane praises Tottenham’s ‘ruthless’ display in hammering of Manchester United

Striker has five goals in his last two games as captain combines with Son Heung-min to demolish United

Harry Kane praised his Tottenham team-mates for a “ruthless” performance at Old Trafford, as Spurs ran out 6-1 winners over Manchester United.

The day started as badly as possible for Spurs, who conceded a first-minute penalty, but Kane and Son Heung-min in particular were quickly able to split the home defence with regularity and the match was effectively over by the half-hour mark.

By then, Spurs had equalised, taken the lead and scored a third, plus Anthony Martial had been sent-off for United.

Kane, who scored two and assisted another, said Spurs went into the game in optimistic mood and he was delighted for the relentless nature of the performance.

“Getting the third and fourth so early really killed the game. Then it was about staying focused,” he said to Sky Sports at full-time.

"We felt really good before the game, we showed the mindset we were in and we were ruthless.

“We had a foothold in the game [before the red card] but when the opposition are down to ten men, you have to take advantage.”

Kane, who has already notched six assists the league this term, was asked about his recent penchant for dropping into deeper areas before turning to play in team-mates.

But he pointed out that it’s a trait he has had for some time - though Spurs are reaping more benefits from it of late.

“It’s always been part of my game, [against] the teams we played with a high line. They press our full-back, I drop and it leaves space for someone to run in behind. It’s always been there but we’ve been more ruthless when the chances come.”
