Manchester United could strengthen further this month with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer inspiring the Red Devils towards a Premier League title challenge, meaning a signing or two in the January transfer window could prove pivotal over the coming months.

United can go top of the Premier League should they win their game in hand after a superb run of form leading up to and during the festive period. They currently sit joint-top of the Premier League with rivals Liverpool on goal difference thanks to the hard-fought win over Aston Villa on Friday night. The rollercoaster season under Solskjaer saw United exit from the Champions League last month. But with domestic fortunes back on the rise there is reason to be optimistic again at Old Trafford.

That optimism could lead to a busier January than was once expected with money available should the right target or targets reveal themselves. Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba is among the potential new recruits, and Ecuadorean midfielder Moises Caicedo is another such name. Summer signing Amad Diallo could join both in Manchester this month with his paperwork finally set to be resolved. Serie A side Atalanta were keen to keep hold of him until the summer but the suggestion is he could be on his way to bolster Solskjaer’s title challengers imminently.

There will likely be exits this month, too, with the likes of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones possible outgoings. Midfielder Jesse Lingard won’t be one of them, however, after seeing a one-year extension option in his contract triggered last week.

We will have all the latest Manchester United news, rumours and gossip – on both comings and goings – throughout the day.

This has been the kind of season where complexions can dramatically change in the space of three games. That has already happened to Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the last few weeks.

United have not felt it for a while. It might be their turn - or it might be their turn for something else. A test like this will tell a lot.

LA LIGA SIDE JOIN RACE TO SIGN ROJO

Spanish club Elche are interested in signing United defender Marcos Rojo, according to Informacion.

Reports emerged earlier this week that the Argentina international was close to an agreement with Boca Juniors.

But Elche, who have identified Rojo as a prime target, could look to hijack that potential deal.

Sheffield United are also mentioned as a possible suitor, while Newcastle and two unnamed La Liga teams are believed to be interested.

UNITED TARGET CAICEDO ‘THE REAL DEAL’

Moises Caicedo is "the real deal", according to South American football expert Tim Vickery.

United are amongst the favourites to secure the signature of the teenage midfielder, who has caught the eye at Independiente del Valle.

“It looks like he’s locked in for Man United and if it goes through they’ve got themselves the real deal Holyfield,” Vickery told Football Daily.

“The way the market is going with South American footballers, is that European clubs want to take them young, as early as possible, so they are buying on promise.

“But this fellow, Moises Caicedo, he’s already much more than a promise - he’s a reality. He’s the first player born in the 21st century to score a goal in South America’s World Cup qualifiers.”

GREALISH COULD COST £90M

United may have to pay as much as £90m to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish, according to the Athletic.

The 25-year-old's exceptional form in the Premier League this season has led to speculation of a big-money move to Old Trafford.

But it remains to be seen if United will be willing to meet Villa's undoubtedly hefty demands.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged his Manchester United players to take "a very big step" and triumph in a semi-final for the first time under his management.

United welcome rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the last four of the EFL Cup, having lost to Pep Guardiola's side at the same stage of the competition last season.

Semi-final defeats in the FA Cup and Europa League followed against Chelsea and Sevilla respectively as Solskjaer failed to end his first full season in charge with silverware.
