Michael Carrick has agreed a new one-year contract extension with Manchester United.

The 34-year-old midfielder had looked likely to bring his ten-year stay at Old Trafford to an end after his previous deal was allowed to run down amid managerial uncertainty.

However, following the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club’s new manager, Carrick has put pen to paper on a deal which will see him stay until at least the summer of 2017.

"This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing.

“It’s great to have the opportunity to work under José Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career. I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future."

Mourinho, who replaced the sacked Louis van Gaal last month, was keen to keep the sqaud’s second longest-serving player on.

"Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game,” he said. “I am pleased that he will be extending his contract.

“His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever.

“Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him.”

Shortly after the announcement, Carrick a picture of him lifting the FA Cup with the caption: “Can't wait to get back to work.. 1 more year for this great club and hopefully more of this!!!”

During his time at the club, Carrick has won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, one League Cup, one Club World Cup and one Champions League.
