How did the fans react to him?

Alan Pardew had vowed to man up and stand in his technical area. But in truth the jeers he had to face were more pantomime that the vicious vitriol he endured at the end of last season. Every time he touched the ball he was jeered. Only when Newcastle went two down was there added venom.

Did he pick the right team?

Pardew picked the right substitute! And he played the right substitute as everything was beginning to unravel. Newcastle were not great and on another day would have lost but they were solid in periods and kept the shape Pardew talks of so often. He does not have a large squad so there weren’t many options open to him.

Are the players playing for him?

The return of Cheick Tiote had a galvanising effect on the side and they started steadily enough, creating half chances. That they found the spirit to come from two goals down suggests there is more fight for the manager than looked the case at Southampton last week.

Does he have a future at Newcastle?

For the time being. Pardew’s position is under intense scrutiny as he fights for his future, which he admitted last week he is doing. Newcastle don’t have a home game for a month which will alleviate the pressure but he must improve a record of 19 points from 75.
