Preview...

Rafa Benitez starts his return to the top flight with what is sure to be a tough visit from Spurs. His Premier League experience will put his team at an advantage over the other newly promoted clubs and he’ll be hoping to cause an early upset against Tottenham.

Spurs will be eyeing up the title for a third season in a row now. After 2 second place finishes, bested both times by exceptional team, you’d think it’s going to be their year.

Newcastle won’t exactly be targeting the top spot any time soon, but they’ll be hoping to stay afloat this season. Benitez has never had a team relegated after a full season, so this will be a real test of his ability.

Despite losing one of their best players, Kyle Walker, to Man City, Spurs haven’t reinvested in any other players- so Pochettino’s team will likely be lining up in the same way that they did last season.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have spent £30million, bringing in Chelsea’s Christian Atsu, Norwich’s Jacob Murphy and Eibar’s Lejeune. Newcastle fans will be hoping to come back to the Premier League with a bang, and with these new signings, a win against Spurs would do just the trick

What time does it start and where can I watch it?

Newcastle kick off their return to the Premier League at home to Tottenham this Sunday. You can watch coverage on Sky Sport’s dedicated Premier League channel from 12:30, kick off at 13:30. Highlights can be caught on BBC One’s Match of the Day from 22:30 on Sunday.

It’s a big game for…

Rafa Benitez. The veteran Premier League manager will be relishing his return to the top flight. He’ll be eager to prove he can be just as successful with newly promoted club as he can with a top table one. A home game at Spurs will be a big challenge for his team and Benitez’s technical prowess will be tested.

Best stat…

Remember that…

That 4-0 thrashing Spurs gave Newcastle in the League cup

One to watch is…

Harry Kane. Last year’s golden boot winner will be looking to grab an early lead in the race for this season’s accolade. Relegation favourites Newcastle will provide a good opportunity to do that.

Newcastle to win: 17/4

Tottenham to win: 13/20

Draw: 3/1

38 mins: Those injuries have sucked the enthusiasm out of St James' Park, and Tottenham are now starting to dominate amid an eerily quiet atmosphere. However, for all their possession, a corner there and the odd attempt at goal here, the Londoners have failed to trouble Rob Elliot.

41 mins: Right on cue! The Newcastle goalkeeper is called into action to pluck Eriksen's long-range tester out of the air after the Danish playmaker had made space for himself outside of the box.

Sam Dymond13 August 2017 14:12

45 mins: Another effort from distance from Eriksen, but nowhere near as convincing. Elliot dives low to his right to comfortably gather as Dele Alli gives his teammate a mouthful for feebly going for goal when he and others were well placed.

There will be three minutes of stoppage time added on at the end of the first half.

HALF-TIME - NEWCASTLE 0 TOTTENHAM 0:

SECOND HALF KICK-OFF: Sky Sports Premier League have brought in four pundits for Sunday's double header and all they had to talk about at half-time was Dwight Gayle slicing a shot over the crossbar from an acute angle. As Tottenham get the second period going, let's hope for better over the next 45 minutes.

48 mins: RED CARD! Jonjo Shelvey has been sent off! The midfielder had been extremely quiet throughout the first half, but he's only ever one indiscretion from absolute idiocy. It comes here after Dele Alli wins a free-kick to much Newcastle annoyance, and as the Tottenham man makes his point by rolling around on the turf, Shelvey makes his by stepping on to the ankles of the England international. It happened right under the nose of Andre Marriner, who calmly produced the red card to stun St James' Park.

52 mins: It's all happening now! After Dwight Gayle had seen his shot parried by Hugo Lloris at the near post, Tottenham broke at pace. Alli, receiving the ire of home fans and players alike, was taken out by a crude Matt Richie tackle on the touchline but with Andre Marriner playing advantage, the visitors continued to pour forward. The ball was eventually worked to the unmarked Kane in the box, whose shot on the turn was blocked at close quarters by Elliot. It was the best chance of the match by far.

Match of the Day punditry coming Jonjo Shelvey's way in 2032.

Sam Dymond13 August 2017 14:47

58 mins: With a man advantage, Tottenham smell blood and Mauricio Pochettino moves to make his first switch of the afternoon. It's been a typically mediocre return to St James' Park for Moussa Sissoko, who will now be replaced by Son Heung-Min.

61 mins: GOAL! NEWCASTLE 0 TOTTENHAM 1:

There it is! Dele Alli infuriates the home fans even further by breaking the deadlock! The England man timed his run to the back post perfectly to meet Christian Eriksen's lofted cross before bouncing a  sliding effort past Rob Elliot. Tottenham in charge, Newcastle in deep trouble.
