The social media war of words between Paul Merson and Andros Townsend has continued today, with Merson mocking the winger after his uneventful seven-minute cameo in Tottenham's drab stalemate against Burnley this afternoon.
Townsend hit back at pundit Merson on Twitter this week after his equaliser for England in the 1-1 draw with Italy in Turin on Tuesday – a response to the former Arsenal player saying that the 23-year-old did not deserve to be in Roy Hodgson's squad.
Townsend tweeted in the immediate aftermath of that game: “Not bad for a player that should be 'nowhere near the squad' ay @PaulMerse?”
Merson responded today after substitute Townsend failed to make any impact at Turf Moor in his first match since that England goal:
What started their original argument was 47-year-old Merson saying that Ashley Young, and not Townsend, should have been in the England squad following Manchester United’s victory over Spurs and the early substitution in the game for the Spurs man.
