Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as they put in one of their worst performances of the season in a 4-0 defeat by Southampton, with Ronald Koeman’s side ending a run of six games without victory.

The game will be remembered for a thunderous goal from Saints’ right-back Cuco Martina, who received a headed clearance from a corner before striking a long-range effort with the outside of his right foot that curled beyond Petr Cech and into the back of the net.

Arsenal made it to half-time without conceding again, but it would get much, much worse after the break. The lead was doubled when Shane Long was left unmarked in the middle, with Sadio Mane picking out the Republic of Ireland striker to hit home first time. However, there was controversy over how he became unmarked, with Laurent Koscielny appearing to have been tripped up in the build up by Long.

A third soon followed when defender Jose Fonte beat five Arsenal defenders and Cech to reach a corner first and head into the net, with Long rounding out the scoring when he broke free and put the ball between Cech’s legs.
