Swansea may have been intent on delivering another hammer blow to the reign of Alan Pardew at Newcastle, but they displayed a touching tribute to Jonas Gutierrez to wish the Magpies midfielder well in his recovery from cancer.

Gutierrez revealed last month that he was suffering from testicular cancer and was undergoing treatment for his illness. Newcastle fans chose the 18th minute – the number that Guiterrez wears for the club – to hold a minute’s applause for the Argentinian, but Swansea took it onto themselves to wish him all the best.

Displaying a picture of the Newcastle player on their big screen in the 18th minute, fans rose to their feet to applaud Gutierrez, with the message “GET WELL SOON JONAS” displayed next to him.

It was a heart-warming gesture from the Premier League side given that both teams were determined to focus on the game itself in the hunt for three valuable points – especially Newcastle who find themselves level with basement side Burnley.
