The FA investigate Pep Guardiola's outburst towards Nathan Redmond after Manchester City's win over Southampton

The Football Association are investigating Pep Guardiola's outburst towards Nathan Redmond at the end of Manchester City's last-gasp 2-1 victory over Southampton at the Etihad on Wednesday evening.

Guardiola shouted and remonstrated with Redmond, pushing the Saints winger in the chest as he was leaving the field at full-time.

Afterwards the City manager denied that he was being abusive and insisted he was only complimenting the player, and on Thursday Redmond corroborated his version of events, while criticising a story by the Sun which claimed Guardiola had used abusive language.

"I want to make it absolutely clear that the Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola did not say what the Sun is falsely claiming in this story," read Redmond's statement.

"Yes he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me. He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season.

“I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep and that’s what makes him one of the best managers in world football."

Redmond added: “Losing the game the way we did in the last kick of the game after working so hard for 90-plus minutes, I was very disappointed. But when one of the world’s best managers compliments you or gives advice in any way, you listen.”

The FA have asked Guardiola for his version of events and he now has until December 4 to respond.
