Jan Vertonghen believes the Tottenham Hotspur fans were correct to boo off their team following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home against Crystal Palace.

The home side were lucky to earn a point and the crowd at White Hart Lane registered their disapproval at the final whistle.

“The fans are not wrong to boo us,” said Vertonghen who made his 100th appearance for Tottenham in the draw. “They want to win and I want to win. I understand their frustration.

“I think we should be winning these games as well. And we try to. We just have to find a way to beat these teams.”

Vertonghen added: “We need to start winning again. Our home form is not good enough. We tried to get back on track against Everton last week and we did – a very important win, I think – but we tried to play the same way [against Palace] and it didn’t work. We didn’t find a way to break them.”

The game was lit up by the flair of Palace wingers Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha. Their manager, Neil Warnock, was delighted with their displays.

“All our forwards have [been positive] this season. Yannick’s improved and improved. The only time I tell him off is when I shout at him and tell him to smile a bit more. When he’s smiling he plays well.”
