Tottenham Hotspur recovered from the disappointment of their midweek defeat by claiming a comfortable three points against relegation-threatened Sunderland.

Christian Eriksen scored twice for the home side as they maintained their challenge for a top-four finish but they had to come from behind after Patrick van Aanholt’s opener.

The left-back gave Sam Allardyce’s men the lead against the run of play with a low shot at a tight angle that crept under goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham’s equaliser followed minutes later, however. Eriksen’s shot at a gaping goalmouth looked as though it would be stopped by Lee Cattermole on the line, but the midfielder spooned his attempted clearance onto the crossbar and it then bounced back over the line.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side came on strong in the second half and took the lead through Mousa Dembele, who found space on the edge of the box to send a low drive into the corner of Jordan Pickford’s goal.

Eriksen extended the lead with a deflected long-range effort and Harry Kane rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot, after Black Cats debutant Jan Kirchoff fouled Danny Rose.
