Transfer news: Manchester City announce signing of striker Alvaro Negredo

27-year-old joins from Sevilla and will join up immediately with the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour

Manchester City have announced the signing of striker Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla, becoming their third signing of the summer so far.

The club has already signed Jesus Navas – who also joined from Sevilla – and Fernandinho, and it is widely expected that Stevan Jovetic will be confirmed as their fourth signing sometime this week while a bid for Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio has been made.

Negredo's current club Fiorentina announced yesterday: “An agreement has been reached with Manchester City Football Club for the permanent sale of the player Stevan Jovetic.”

He will join up with a strike-force that contains Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and John Guidetti, and City confirmed that Negredo has joined their rapidly growing squad.

It is understood that City will pay an initial £16.4mi plus add-ons of up to £4.2m.

Negredo was the fourth highest scorer in La Liga last season with 25 league goals, finishing behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao, and the 27-year-old joins after spells with Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid and Almeria before Sevilla broke their club transfer record to sign the 6”1’ striker in 2009.

A statement on the Manchester City club website said: "City are delighted to announce the signing of Alvaro Negredo, who becomes the club's third new recruit of the summer."

He has 14 caps for Spain and has six goals to his name, and was part of the successful Euro 2012 side where he started the semi-final clash against Portugal.

Negredo told a press conference in Spain earlier this week: "I have spoken to Navas, he's an important player in anyone's squad and I'm very happy to be playing with him again.

"Manuel Pellegrini completely convinced me to join Manchester City. It's a big club and a new challenge for me."

Negredo will now join up with the rest of the City squad on their pre-season tour as they head to Asia to face South China on Wednesday, having started the season in South Africa.
