Trevor Sinclair: Former England and Man City star apologises for calling Liverpool ‘bin dippers’
Sinclair caused offence by referencing class prejudice
Former England and Manchester City star Trevor Sinclair has apologised after labelling Liverpool ”bin dippers”.
After City’s victory over Burnley closed the gap on the Reds to eight points at the top of the Premier League, Sinclair tweeted: “Bin dippers we’re coming for you”.
The term is a slur long used by rival fans and is widely understood to refer to the poverty historically suffered by the city, particularly that during the Thatcher government of the 1980s. It is considered by many a form of class prejudice fostered by intense tribalism among football supporters.
Despite initial backlash from supporters, Sinclair urged fans to calm down, adding: ”So sensitive...clam down you’re still 8 points ahead”.
But Sinclair has now deleted the tweet and released an apology, emphasising his own working class background.

“It wasn’t my intention to offend anyone, especially from a social stance.
“I’m a working class lad and understand how it’s been taken. Sorry.”
