Troy Deeney could be suspended for 11th game of the season if banned for middle-fingered Chelsea celebration
Deeney has already been handed a three and four-match ban this season
Watford captain Troy Deeney could face a four-game ban – his third suspension of the season – after celebrating scoring the opening goal against Chelsea on Monday night by raising his middle fingers.
Deeney converted a 42nd-minute penalty against 10-man Chelsea after Gerard Deulofeu was judged to have been brought down by Thibaut Courtois.
The 29-year-old was jeered prior to taking the penalty by the visiting fans before firing past Courtois, only to then swear at Chelsea supporters in the aftermath.
If found guilty, Deeney faces a four-game ban, which would bring his total of missed games through suspension this season to 11.
Deeney was given a retrospective three-game ban for raising his hands to the face of Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen before getting a red card in December for a foul on Huddersfield Town’s Collin Quaner, for which he served a four-match suspension.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli found himself in hot water earlier this season for making a similar gesture while playing for England against Slovenia.
Alli was caught on camera raising his middle finger during the 2-1 victory over Slovenia and was given a one-game ban and a £3,800 fine for his “offensive and unsporting” behaviour.
