Wayne Rooney is getting desperate for a goal.

Having been put back into his preferred striker's role by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal this season, he's so far failed to find the back of the net. With no goal in the first three games of United's season, his barren run at club level prior to today's match at Newcastle stretched to nine games.

Hoping to break the seal, Newcastle were arguably the best opponents Rooney could face. The England captain has scored 12 goals and assisted seven more in 20 Premier League appearances against the Magpies.

And just a couple of minutes in at Old Trafford, it looked like Rooney had done it again.

Adnan Januzaj played a wonderful through-ball which Rooney latched onto before unleashing a shot past Tim Krul. Despite the cheers around Old Trafford, the goal was immediately ruled out for offside.

The wait goes on.
