West Brom 1 Liverpool 1: Kolo Toure says sorry for 'crazy' mistake that led to equaliser

Toure played a shocking ball across the edge of the box that allowed West Brom striker Victor Anichebe to level the scores and cost the Reds two crucial points

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has apologised for his “crazy” pass that allowed West Brom striker Victor Anichebe level the scores in Sunday’s Premier League clash that saw the Reds’ let slip what could be two valuable points in the hunt for fourth place.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were leading 1-0 thanks to Daniel Sturridge’s opener when he got on the end of a brilliant Luis Suarez dink across the box, and the Reds looked to be on their way to earning a second victory of the week following the landslide Merseyside derby victory last Tuesday.

However, with Toure under pressure after goalkeeper Simon Mignolet played the ball out to the Ivorian, who proceeded to pass across goal and straight into the path of Anichebe. The former Everton man didn’t need a second invitation to blast the ball past Mignolet and give the Baggies a crucial point in their bid for survival.

Toure was visibly distraught with his error immediately, and admitted that his “terrible” error was hard to take given the side had played well up to that point.

“It was a terrible pass by me,” Toure told The Liverpool Echo. “I should have passed to one of our players but instead I passed it straight to the striker.

“I just didn't see [Anichebe]. I should have played it to Aly [Cissokho] on the side. I made a very bad pass.

“I don't know why I passed the ball into the middle of the pitch, it was crazy.

“I'm disappointed for me and the team. It's hard to take, especially for me, because we played well.

“The manager knows how disappointed I am. My pass put the team in a difficult situation.”

Liverpool were criticised for not strengthening their defence in January as they instead pursued Dnipro attacking midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka. However, Toure will have a chance to make up for his error when the Reds face Arsenal back-to-back in their next two games as they clash in both the Premier League and the FA Cup fifth round.
