West Ham were left to bemoan the decision of referee Mark Clattenburg to send off Cheikhou Kouyate for the 2-2 draw at Upton Park with the visitors drawing level shortly after the midfielder was given his marching orders.
Palace had taken a surprise lead when Damien Delaney seized on a mistake by Hammers goalkeeper Adrian, but Manuel Lanzini immediately hauled West Ham back into the tie as he got onto a poor Scott Dann clearance to smash the ball into the net.
West Ham were soon leading, and it was thanks to yet another moment of magic from the midfield revelation Dimitri Payet. The France international stood over a free kick 25 yards out, and tricked goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey into going the wrong way to fire a high and curling effort into the top right corner from the left of the area.
The Hammers were leading at the break, but Kouyate was to receive a red card in the 67th minute for an innocuous looking challenge on Dwight Gayle, and Palace immediately grew in belief.
It paid off as substitute Dwight Gayle took advantage of sloppy defending to place the ball past Adrian and earn Palace a much needed point.
