Yaya Toure injury latest: Manchester City midfielder set to return in time to help with Premier League title fight

Toure limped out of the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday but initial fears that he wouldn't play again this season appear premature

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Yaya Toure will need least a fortnight to recover from the groin injury that forced the midfielder off during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Liverpool, dampening fears he could miss the rest of the season.

The City manager confirmed that the injury is not as bad as first feared, which had put the midfielder’s participation in the World Cup with the Ivory Coast into question as well as City’s Premier League title challenge.

But it appears that he could return in time for the trip to Goodison Park to face Everton on May 3. However, that would still mean that Pellegrini would be without the influential midfielder for crucial games against Sunderland, West Brom and Crystal Palace, with City knowing that they must win each of their remaining six matches to stand any chance of winning a second league title in three years.

Pellegrini said: "Yaya has a muscle injury. We will see with the doctor how many days.

"Maybe it is not so hard as we thought at the beginning but I think he needs at least 10 days or two weeks to recover."

The Chilean also confirmed that both Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero are fit to start the match against Sunderland at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Kompany was a last-mintue injury scare before the Liverpool defeat, and looked off the pace at Anfield as he was at fault for all three goals, while Aguero only made his return from a five-match absence when he came off the bench against the Reds for the final 22 minutes.

"Vincent is okay. He is fit, he is in the squad list," Pellegrini confirmed.

"Sergio is in the squad list also. We will see tomorrow (who) the 11 starters (are)."
