Thomas Tuchel respects Ralph Hasenhuttl

Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong condemned Chelsea to a 2-1 defeat as Southampton leapfrogged the lacklustre Blues in the Premier League.

Teenage midfielder Lavia became the first player born in 2004 to score in the Premier League with a fine strike at St Mary’s Stadium, before Armstrong broke a 22-game duck as Saints stunned Chelsea.

The visitors had led through Raheem Sterling’s third goal in two games, only for Southampton to turn the game on its head in a challenging night for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Chelsea might be a team in transition with more big-name and big-money arrivals just around the corner courtesy of bullish new owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. But the top-four-hunting Blues should still not be in the business of losing a clash like this against a remodelled and youthful, but admittedly gritty, Southampton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s rejuvenated Saints jumped ahead of Chelsea into seventh place in the table, with a major win for the south coast men.

‘We’re struggling with our focus and consistency’ say Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BT Sport: “We started well in all the games almost but obviously we are struggling with our focus and consistency in matches. We struggled to find answers and find the way back if things don’t go in our direction.

“Things did go in our direction today but then we struggled after the equaliser.

“I don’t know if concern is the right word. I absolutely dislike to lose, it is the second time this season and I don’t think it takes a lot to beat us and this I don’t like.

“We try to win matches and the way we do this is something we need to understand as fast as possible. I also don’t understand why we are in this situation with injuries to all midfield.

“I think in the first 20 minutes we created half chances but struggled to score. That is also not brand new for us and that doesn’t necessarily have the consequence you can lose matches, you can win 1-0.”

Southampton’s Romeo Lavia scored his first goal for the club tonight to bring them back on level terms. It was also his first goal in the Premier League.

He gave his thoughts to BT Sport after the match: “It is an amazing feeling to bounce back from the defeat at the weekend. I have not scored in a long time, so what a feeling to score here at home and in front of my family as well.

“I’ll be honest I don’t really score like that even in training but today was my lucky day, it went in.

“We don’t stop. It is about the spirit of the team, we always communicate and tell each other to keep pushing to the end. We are building a great core in the team, we keep building.”

Southampton’s Adam Armstrong, who scored the winning goal tonight, spoke to BT Sport after the match saying: “We knew it would be a tough night tonight.

“Chelsea are a tough opposition but the lads dug deep. Nights like this we won’t forget. It was frustrating on Saturday [against Manchester United], we had a few chances. That is football. We dug deep tonight.

“The lads are working hard, we have a lot of youth. Romeo [Lavio] has been top class since he has come in. We know how hard the Premier League is but if you work hard and take your chances and that is what we did tonight.

“Great night tonight, we will celebrate tonight.”

FT Southampton 2-1 Chelsea

This is Southampton’s second victory of the season. They’re up to seven points in the league and every one has come from losing positions.

The same happened tonight after Raheem Sterling’s opener but Romeo Lavia equalised with a glorious strike before Adam Armstrong blasted the Saints to victory before half-time.
