ARSENAL BOUND...

Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is in the market for a defender at his Friday press conference.

"Yes, we are more [in the market now]," the Arsenal manager said. "We have (Calum) Chambers and we have (Hector) Bellerin, who is coming on well, and I want to give them a chance as well, but of course we are in the market like many other clubs. We work really hard, morning until late night, to try to get one or two players in."

When asked if he was still looking at West Ham defender Winston Reid, Wenger said: "Of course.

"We are out on the market every day, all our scouts, all our people are working hard to find a defender."

The Gunners are leading the race for Dinamo Zagreb's Marcelo Brozovic, who has been dubbed the 'new Xavi' by the Croation press. According to the Daily Mail, the north London club will make a £6million bid for the 22-year-old, having had a smaller bid already rejected - AC Milan are also interested.

French newspaper Le Sport 10 says Wenger could turn to Lorient defender Raphael Guerreiro after Mathieu Debuchy was ruled out for three months following shoulder surgery. Guerreiro, 22, plays as a left-back and has two caps for Portugal.

The Daily Express have put two and two together and reached Michael Essien after the former Chelsea midfielder's agent said he won't extend his contract at AC Milan beyond this summer.

Wenger also confirmed that a fee had been agreed for Legia Warsaw teenager Krystian Bielik and that he was having a medical today.

THE DEAL'S OFF...

Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk has told the Daily Record this morning that he has been priced out of a move by his club. The club want to keep their star man as they are still challenging on four fronts; Celtic have asked for £10m, a price Arsenal are reluctant to pay for the 23-year-old.

The agent of Grzegorz Krychowiak, Cesary Kucharski, has told Tuttomercatoweb that the Seville man is staying in Spain. The Daily Star had linked Arsenal with an £18m bid for the defensive midfielder, who was signed from Stade de Reims for just £3m in the summer.
