Arsenal look set to miss out on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot after Italian side Roma became the front-runners to land him on transfer deadline day.

The Gunners have been linked with the 19-year-old Frenchman throughout the summer, with manager Arsene Wenger believed to be a fan of the teenager. Rabiot is capable of filling the defensive midfield role that has troubled the North London club in recent years, although his inexperience would prove to be an issue if he were to make his way to the Emirates.

However, that switch now appears unlikely after reports in France claimed the PSG youngster has been given the green light to head to the Serie A.

French newspaper L’Equipe claims that the French league champions have given permission to Rabiot to hold personal talks with Roma, who are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.

It’s believed that Roma have persuaded PSG to part company with the young prospect by lodging a £11.9m fee, despite Rabiot’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The news comes as a blow to Wenger and Arsenal as their search for a holding midfielder continues. The Gunners appear to have already missed out on Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender, while Morgan Schneiderlin looks set to remain at Southampton after pushing for an exit at St Mary’s.
