Lukas Podolski has written an emotional farewell letter to Arsenal fans after completing his transfer to Galatasaray last weekend, in which he labels the Gunners' faithful the "best fans in England".

30-year-old Podolski ended his three-year stay at the Emirates Stadium having fallen out of favour with Arsene Wenger, and spent the second half of last season on loan with Italian side Inter Milan in what was a rather unsuccessful move.

Having made 82 appearances for the north London club – in which he notched a rather commendable 31 goals – Podolski had adored himself to the Arsenal fans that was helped by his exuberant personality and likeable character, and a number of supporters were sad to see him leave even if it was in the best interests of the Germany international.

The decision to leave Arsenal was clearly a tough one for Podolski himself, and having been unveiled by the Turkish side last Saturday, the 125-time capped World Cup winner took to Twitter to express his gratitude to the fans that used to cheer him own and thank them for their support over the years.

“Over the last 3 years I’ve had the pleasure of working with some amazing people at Arsenal, I want to thank everyone from all the staff behind the scenes to the manager & my team mates, who have all helped make London a second home to me,” wrote Podolski.

“To the fans… The best fans in England, who have supported myself and the team no matter what, you will forever hold a special place in my heart and I will forever be a Gunner!

“I am confident that next season the team will be challenging for that league title and I will be watching on as a fan! COYG”

Podolski could yet return to Arsenal next season, with Galatasaray and the Gunners both in the hat for the Champions League group stage draw, and the two sides actually faced each other in the same stage last season where Arsenal ran out 4-1 winners on both occasions.
