Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

Barcelona are considering an approach for Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak if they are priced out of a move for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.

The Spanish champions have long held an interest in Martinez, whose contract at Inter contains a £96m release clause, while the Argentine is keen to unite with compatriot Lionel Messi.

Martinez has also attracted interest from Real Madrid, and one of his two agents, Beto Yaque, spoke with a number of top Premier League clubs on a visit to England prior to the January transfer window.

However, there is a growing fear Barcelona may have to sell before being able to trigger Martinez’s release clause, with the first-team squad recently agreeing a 70 per cent pay cut during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Independent understands Barcelona have now begun identifying cheaper alternatives in case of that scenario, with Swedish international Isak, who signed for Sociedad from Borussia Dortmund last summer, actively being considered by the club’s recruitment department.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a stunning breakout season in Spain, scoring 14 goals this season, including a double against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.
