Bastian Schweinsteiger is "flattered" by the interest being shown in him by Manchester United, Bayern Munich have revealed.

The World Cup winner is understood to be Louis van Gaal's top midfield target this summer.

Bayern Munich want to keep the Germany international at the Allianz Arena, but with the 30-year-old having just a year to run on his current contract, the Bundesliga champions are in a weak negotiating position.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that the club will hold talks with Schweinsteiger when he returns to training.

"I spoke to Bastian Schweinsteiger on the phone while on holiday and we're going to meet again when he's back," Rummenigge said at a press conference on Thursday.

"I'm not going to hide the fact that I discerned from these talks that he is flattered by the interest from England."

Schweinsteiger played under Van Gaal at Bayern, winning a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double, part of his collection of eight Bundesliga titles and seven domestic cup triumphs for the Bavarian club.
