Tottenham Hotspur appear to be closing in on the signing of Ben Davies, with reports last night that the Swansea full-back was set to undergo a medical with the London club.

The Wales international, who has drawn comparisons with fellow countryman Gareth Bale, has also attracted interest from Liverpool but the 21-year-old is thought to favour Spurs, despite the presence of the former Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, because he would expect to be a first-team regular at White Hart Lane. Liverpool are also thought to be pursuing Alberto Moreno, the Sevilla left-back.

The added attraction of the Tottenham deal for Swansea is that they would be interested in luring Gylfi Sigurdsson back after his successful loan spell there two years ago, though there would be difficulties over his salary.

The negotiations have also been aided by the fact that both Swansea and Spurs are on tour in America. Davies played 45 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Chivas Guadalajara on Wednesday.

Sigurdsson was named in the Spurs team to face Seattle Sounders last night, but he was withdrawn from the side shortly before kick-off.

Manchester United, who are also preparing for the new season with matches in the United States, have been widely expected to sell Javier Hernandez since the arrival of Luis van Gaal as manager signalled a reshaping of their squad.

Last night United revealed that the striker, who made four substitute appearances for Mexico during the World Cup, scoring once, would be joining their tour party on Tuesday.
