Chelsea transfer news: Rob Green completes move and signs one-year deal after leaving Huddersfield Town
Former England international joins Chelsea on a free transfer

Chelsea have announced the signing of veteran former England goalkeeper Rob Green on a one-year deal.
The former Norwich City, West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper arrives at Stamford Bridge as back-up for Thibaut Courtois and Willy Cabellero – although the former’s future remains far from clear with Real Madrid interested in signing him.
The move for the 38-year-old Green is something of a surprise given that he did not make a single appearance for Huddersfield Town in the Premier League last season, and his last competitive match came in the Championship with Leeds United, having not played in the top flight since QPR were relegated in 2015.
“It has been a whirlwind 24 hours,” Green said. “You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation.
“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”
It’s widely believed that Chelsea have signed Green on the short-term deal in an effort to up their homegrown quota, with Premier League clubs needing to have at least eight players to have emerged from the English youth system within their 25-player squads or otherwise leave vacant spaces to make up for the lack of players.

At present, Chelsea have six players who are classed as homegrown within their squad – seven including Green – although only Andreas Christensen qualifies as one of their club-trained players.
