AS Monaco will go head-to-head with Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Chelsea striker Fernando Torres.

According to the Daily Mail, the Ligue 1 side will rival the La Liga champions to Torres' signature. Chelsea are willing to sell him should they get an offer in excess of £20million.

Torres is keen to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place but Blues’ manager Jose Mourinho might seek to offload the centre-forward in order to recoup some of their money spent so far this summer.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move back to Atletico but the Spanish champions are struggling to come up with the sufficient funds needed to land him.

Now that James Rodriguez has joined Real Madrid and rumours there are circling that Radamel Falcao could be joining him in doing so, Monaco will be looking to reinforce their attacking options.

With the fee that Chelsea are asking for and Torres’ sizeable wage demands, Monaco could be a more viable destination.

Chelsea paid Liverpool £50m for the striker in 2011. Torres scored just five goals in 28 Premier League games last term.
