John Stones to Chelsea: Everton defender 'devastated' by transfer refusal

John Stones was reportedly devastated at being told that Everton would not sell him Chelsea at any price.

The reigning Premier League champions have now given up their pursuit of the England international after having a bid of £38m turned down. It was their fourth bid for the defender and a rejection that sees Jose Mourinho look elsewhere.

Stones met with manager Roberto Martinez at the club’s Finch Farm training ground on Thursday and was given the news in person that his transfer request, handed in on Tuesday, was to be rejected and that the club would not sell him.

The 21-year-old, who only agreed a five-year contract at Goodison Park 12 months ago, was reportedly devastated by the news fearing the opportunity to move to a club of Chelsea's stature might not come again. There was no question in Stones’ mind that he wanted to leave and it was his understanding that he would be a regular starter at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho.

In a statement, Everton said they had rejected Stones’ transfer request. “Since the start of the transfer window, we have resolutely turned down offers from another Premier League football club for our player. John is not for sale and he will remain a highly valued member of our first team squad.”
