Chelsea are closing in on a £90m transfer for Germany midfielder Kai Havertz, with Bayern Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz admitting on Monday that he did not expect the 21-year-old to train with his squad again.

Chelsea are on a spending spree this summer having already signed forward Timo Werner, winger Hakim Ziyech and left-back Ben Chilwell for a combined £125m, in addition to the free transfers of defenders Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

Havertz would be the most eye-catching addition yet, as one of the most highly rated young players in European football. He is already a full Germany international with one goal in seven caps, and had a standout season with Leverkusen in 2019-20, scoring 18 goals and assisting nine more in 45 appearances.

Bosz said both Havertz and the forward Kevin Volland are set to depart, with the latter heading for Monaco, leaving the squad which finished fifth in the Bundesliga badly depleted.

“Unfortunately our squad has not yet been finalised,” said Bosz in a preseason news conference. “I no longer expect that Kevin and Kai will train with us again. It is possible that other players will also leave, so we definitely have to bring some new players in.”

Havertz has agreed the terms of a long-term deal with Chelsea and only the details between the two clubs are left to be finalised.
