Liverpool transfer news: Danny Ings moves closer to summer switch to Anfield after Burnley relegation

Ings is out of contract in the summer and looks unlikely to sign a new deal to remain with Burnley

Liverpool are closing in on Burnley striker Danny Ings with a summer transfer looking more and more likely by the day after the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League last weekend.

Ings is out of contract with the soon-to-be Championship side, and the hope was that Premier League survival would lead to the 22-year-old extending his stay at Turf Moor beyond the end of the season.

However, as is always the way when a side is relegated, Burnley look set to lose their star player, although he will not move clubs for nothing as a compensation fee will have to be agreed by a tribunal should he join another Premier League club as he is under 24 years of age.

Liverpool aren’t sure fire favourites for Ings with competition coming from Manchester United, while ex-United manager David Moyes has publicly expressed an interest in the forward in the hope that he will join Real Sociedad. Borussia Monchengladbach have also been linked with Ings.

The move for Ings, which is being reported by the Liverpool Echo, is unsurprising given Liverpool’s strike-force has been nothing short of woeful this season. With Luis Suarez moving on to Barcelona last summer, manager Brendan Rodgers has failed to replace the 31-goal berth the Uruguayan’s exit caused and the additions of Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have not worked out.

Both look set to be shipped on in the summer along with Fabio Borini, and with lingering doubts over Daniel Sturridge’s long-term injury troubles, Rodgers is almost certain to move for at least one striker in the transfer window.

Divock Origi will arrive at the club in the summer having agreed to join the club last summer in a £10m move from French side Lille, but the addition of Ings will give Rodgers the option of someone who has proven this season that he can make the grade in the Premier League should he move to Anfield.
