Premier League transfer round-up: Higuain signs for Chelsea

Liverpool were quiet on January transfer deadline day.

Liverpool didn't sign a single player despite being linked with a host of different players. When asked about potential incomings earlier this week, manager Jurgen Klopp said: “We will see what happens before January 31st. Nothing to say.”

The club will now wait until the summer and may again pursure the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Abdulkadir Omur, Sandro Tonali and Timo Werner.

Let's start over in France and a possible move for Adrien Rabiot.

The French international is said to have turned down a move to Spurs because he wants to join Liverpool instead, according to The Sun.

The 23-year-old's contract is up in the summer.

There will almost certainly be more exits than arrivals at Anfield today.

One of those could be Adam Lallana.

The England international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and could be allowed to leave.

Steven Gerrard's Rangers have been touted as a possible destination.

One of the few high-profile players linked with Liverpool this month is Timo Werner, although a late deal for the German forward seems unlikely.

The Reds, according to the Evening Standard, are reluctant to spend the €70million required to bring in Werner because they want to give youngster Rhian Brewster, signed from Chelsea in the summer, a chance in the first team.

The priority for Liverpool today appears to be to get Lazar Markovic - remember him? - off the wage bill. The 24-year-old Serb, who joined the club in a £20million move from Benfica in 2014, has not made a competitive appearance for Liverpool since 2015.

Instead, he has been on several loans at clubs across Europe: Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull City and Anderlecht. Now he seems set to leave the club permanently.

Markovic was linked with moves to Olympiacos and Fiorentina earlier in the window, but they failed to materialise. The Mirror, though, claim that Besiktas are hopeful of completing a deal before tonight's deadline.

Bad news, potentially, for Hull City, who were hopeful of securing Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn on loan. The Welsh international has just returned from a loan at Sheffield United, and was expected to join Hull before the close of the window.

But, according to the Sun reporter Alan Nixon, Liverpool have changed their mind on Woodburn.

The Independent Sports Editor Ed Malyon has a Liverpool transfer update:

Plymouth Argyle will sign former Liverpool U-23 captain Lloyd Jones on loan today.

The Luton Town defender will return to his boyhood club, who he left as a teenager, in order to help Argyle fight the drop in League One.

Jones has played for both England and Wales at youth level.

Liverpool youngster Matty Virtue is set to leave the club to join Blackpool on a permanent deal, according to the Daily Mail

The 21-year-old midfielder is captain of the Reds Under-23 side but has yet to break into the first team. Virtue is expected to sign a two-and-a-half year deal at Blackpool.

Could Philippe Coutinho make a shock return to Liverpool? Probably not. On deadline days of the past, it might have been a possibility. But most clubs are being annoyingly sensible this year.

The Brazilian's move to Barcelona hasn't quite worked out so far, and Spanish publication Sport claim Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, are interested in bringing him back to England.

Journalist Guillem Balague has ruled out the chance of a move before the deadline. He spoke to the Liverpool Echo:

Barcelona don’t want to get rid of him now. That is the end of that obviously, that became very clear earlier in the transfer window. But there is a big but because the problem with Barcelona is they are increasing the wage list, having decreased it of course.

In terms of Coutinho, they haven’t got to that stage where they have to push, or want to push, Coutinho out. But the jury is out. It’s not clear what his role is at Barcelona, he’s not confident either.

It's all a bit quiet on the transfer front for Liverpool. Benfica youngster Joao Felix was a name mentioned as a potential deadline day acquisition, but that seems more likely to be left until the summer.

Sport Bild reported that the 19-year-old was on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea. Benfica apparently rejected a bid of £61million earlier in the month.
