Manchester United transfer news: Diego Godin dismisses leaving Atletico Madrid 'for many years' and wants to end career in Uruguay

Godin has been heavily linked with a move to United either in January or next summer but the centre-back wants to stay in Spain

Diego Godin appears to have dismissed any move to Manchester United after confirming he wants to remain with Atletico Madrid "for many years".

The 28-year-old Uruguay international has been constantly linked with a move to United since Louis van Gaal took over the reins, and a move either in January or next summer appeared to be likely as the Dutchman looked to strengthen his defence.

Godin has proven his calibre during his time with Atletico, having proven an integral cog in the La Liga winning side that clinched the Spanish title ahead of rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Not only that, Godin managed to score in the Champions League final to put Atletico on the cusp of an unprecedented league and European Cup double, only for a late Sergio Ramos equaliser to send the tie into extra-time and allow Real to triumph 4-1.

Godin has remained of similar importance to Diego Simeone this season having made 23 appearances in all competitions, while scoring two goals in their league defence.

To make matters worse for United, Godin explained that any exit from Spain would only be to return to his homeland, in order to repay the affection his nation’s fans.

"At this point, I feel that I’m in the best time of my career and I still see my retirement very far," Godin told ESPN. “I would like to stay many years here [at Atletico Madrid].

"But it is true that I also have an attraction from my country and at any point in the future I would like to return to Uruguay, to respond to the love they have showed me during this years.

"But just the time will say. It is difficult to know where I will be playing in as many years."
