Manchester United transfer news: Marouane Fellaini may not be sold after being pictured in crutches

Marouane Fellaini could remain a Manchester United player until at least January after he was pictured in crutches.

The Belgian had been linked with a move to Rafael Benitez's Napoli but the injury, reported to be ankle ligament damage, will put a potential move in doubt.

Fellaini is believed to have suffered the injured during training and was pictured in The Sun wearing a protective boot and walking on crutches as he left the Carrington training ground. The 26-year-old is awaiting a scan to determine the extent of the damage.

Neither United or Napoli have commented on the injury, but a potential deal is in danger of being called off.

Fellaini has had a torrid time since arriving at Old Trafford for £27.5m from Everton last summer and is yet to score for his new club.

Injury and loss of form restricted him to just 16 Premier League starts last season and he was again a substitute for Louis van Gaal's first match in charge at Old Trafford.

With Michael Carrick out until October Van Gaal's paper-thin squad will be stretched even further. The Dutch coach was forced to hand debuts to Jesse Lingard and Tyler Blackett in the defeat against Swansea, and though Marcos Rojo is set to arrive soon, Nani went the other way.

United are expecting a busy final two weeks of the transfer window as they look to mount a serious challenge to get back into the top four.
