Manchester United have been told by Monaco that they must pay £20m for Fabinho.

A right-back is one of Louis van Gaal's main priorities this summer, as the Dutchman continues the rebuilding process at Old Trafford.

Fabinho has spent the last two years on loan at Monaco from Rio Ave in Portugal, and recently made his transfer to the Ligue 1 side permanent for just £4.2m.

United are looking for a player to compete with Antonio Valencia and Rafael for the right-back berth.

Manchester United manager Van Gaal recently said he is looking forward to the challenge of building his new-look team for next season.

The Dutch coach spent £150million last summer to take the team back into the Champions League and will get the same again this summer as he looks to have the club challenging for the Premier League title and for domestic and European silverware.

"It is enjoyable because you are preparing a team," he told the Manchester United website.

"You have to make a team probably - it's dependable how much new players are coming."
