Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez will not be moving to Manchester United this summer after the Champions League finalists announced he has agreed a new five-year contract, ending reports of a move to Old Trafford.

Saul had been linked with a move to United earlier in the season, and his individual wonder goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final first-leg saw him draw widespread praise for his technical ability.

Unsurprisingly, the reports linking Saul with United immediately resurfaced, but Atletico have announced the new deal that will keep Saul tied down to the Madrid club until 2021.

"I'm very happy to be able to continue defending this shirt," said Saul when speaking to Atletico’s official website after the deal was announced.

Atletico’s sporting director, Jose Luis Caminero, praised Saul’s commitment and stressed that all parties were pleased that the deal had been completed ahead of the summer transfer window to end any speculation of an exit.

"We are all very happy with the agreement reached with Saul," Caminero said. "He is an excellent footballer, who has been trained in our academy and reinforces our commitment to the players in the club."

Despite United’s reported interested in the Spain international, Saul was said to be happy in the Spanish capital was expected to commit his future to the La Liga club, with the 21-year-old rapidly closing on his half-century of appearances for Atletico after making 47 appearances to-date.
