Manchester United transfer mogul Ed Woodward says the club will "continue to strengthen" despite their huge spending since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in May 2013.

In the 29 months since the Scottish great retired, United have spent more than £300million on first-team players, including Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial.

The club have undergone an extensive overhaul with only seven players - David De Gea, Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young - remaining from the squad that won the Premier League under Ferguson in 2012-13.

But executive vice-chairman Woodward told a Fans' Forum at Old Trafford that the club would "contine to look to strengthen the squad and to reward young talent" with chances in the first team.

A return to Champions League football "delighted" Woodward with revenues expected to breeze past £500m this year. Woodward added that the club had been linked with more than 100 players over the summer with only six arriving.

A spokesman said that the club were reviewing the possibility of having a women's team, after coming under fire for not having a team in the WSL, like the majority of other Premier League clubs.

The club are also in talks with a Russian firm to provide shuttle buses for the Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow on 21 October.

One fan also criticised the club for losing out to local rivals Manchester City with young fans, claiming that United were not doing as much to promote the club, whereas City were providing free tickets and visiting schools.

United responded that they were happy with the long-term work they were doing to promote the club locally, with free tickets given out and members of the Under-21s squad visiting children in schools.
