Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal: Gunners could move for France defender after World Cup exit

The France right-back has been strongly linked with an £11m move to the Emirates and could now make the switch after France were eliminated in Brazil

Mathieu Debuchy could be set to join Arsenal after France were eliminated from the World Cup.

The 29-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes in France's 1-0 defeat to Germany on Friday, has been heavily tipped to join the Gunners in recent weeks.

Arsenal have been actively looking for a new right-back since Bacary Sagna left the club to join Manchester City on a free transfer. Ivory Coast full-back Serge Aurier was reported to have been a target for the North London side after impressing at the World Cup, and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had been strongly tipped to move for the 21-year-old.

But it appears that Wenger is keen to sign his compatriot and can now press ahead with negotiations following Debuchy's return to the UK.

Newcastle are reportedly looking to receive around £11 million for the right-back - twice the amount they paid to sign him from Ligue 1 outfit Lille 18 months ago.

Speculation has been rife that Debuchy would leave St James' Park after he favourited a tweet that read: '@Arsenal @MatDebuchy hopefully soon to be unveiled.' He also removed the mention of 'NUFC' that was previously included on his Twitter profile.
