N'Zogbia is not for sale, says Martinez

Roberto Martinez yesterday rejected suggestions that Charles N'Zogbia might leave Wigan Athletic this January. He described the speculation as "a compliment" but denied that he was financially obliged to sell the winger.

"It's a compliment when you've a team chasing you that would love to have you in their squad," said Martinez of rival clubs' interest in N'Zogbia, which he predicted might encourage improved performances from the player concerned. "It's speculation, but it's positive. When you go into a game on the back of a defeat and you read someone wants you, it's a great lift. But to get such a compliment it can only help you as a player and the football club as a whole."

Martinez insisted he has no intention of selling N'Zogbia. "We're not here to try to find business, we don't need to sell players, and that's always our position. We're not talking to any clubs, so it's not as if there are negotiations that you hope break down."

Wigan host Aston Villa tonight, hoping to win their first Premier League game since Boxing Day. Villa come three days after beating Manchester City 1-0, thanks to a debut goal from £24m striker Darren Bent.

Martinez is wary of the England forward's threat. "We all know the pace he has, which allows him to get into great positions. Once in those positions he has a great goalscoring record, and when he plays with confidence he is someone who can win a game single-handed."
