The transfer window is open which means it's that time of year when stories of clubs spending ludicrous sums of money on players you've never heard of is par for the course. Here, we take a look at some of today's more intriguing rumours...

Christian Benteke rocked Aston Villa when he handed in a transfer request last night, and he is now odds-on to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgian may not be the only forward departing from Villa Park, as out of favour Darren Bent is being targeted by Newcastle United. Alan Pardew is looking to strengthen his strike force further, with the Magpies reportedly interested in QPR's Loic Remy.

On the way out of St. James Park is midfielder Dan Gosling after he has agreed terms with newly promoted Crystal Palace. Also another deal close to being completed is Ivory Coast forward, Wilfred Bony to Swansea.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has dealt a blow to Manchester United fans. Talking on Cristiano Ronaldo's future, Perez said the number 9 will retire at the Bernabeu.

One other European star could be heading to England as Stevan Jovetic has been linked with Manchester City and Arsenal in the last 24 hours.

Finally, a British transfer record could be on the cards... With Wayne Rooney being linked with Chelsea. Reports today have said that the England striker could move to Stamford Bridge for a fee of £60m.
