Christian Eriksen has thrown his Tottenham future into doubt after rejecting a contract extension, although the north London club appear to have the power to extend his stay at White Hart Lane after negotiations continued between the two parties.

Eriksen is believed to be keen to sign a new deal with Spurs, but wants his wages improved significantly to put him on an even keel with the top earners at the club. The Evening Standard reports that Eriksen is looking to join the likes of Mousa Dembele, Erik Lamela and highest earner Hugo Lloris, who currently collects £80,000-a-week.

The Denmark international currently has two years left to run on his contract and his future is seen as a priority matter by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is also determined to tie defender Jan Vertonghen down to a new deal as well. With Vertonghen and Eriksen out of contract in 2018, Levy wants to tie down two of their star performers last season to prevent them from heading into the final year of their respective contracts.

Eriksen arrived at White Hart Lane three years ago as part of the spending spree that followed Gareth Bale’s world record move to Real Madrid, and it is said that he remains keen to commit his future to the club despite the latest offer being rejected.

Speaking in February after he scored the winning goal against Manchester City, Eriksen said: “We’re still talking about the contract. It’s all positive. I think everyone can see I can fulfil my ambitions here.”

Another player who Spurs wish to reach a contract extension agreement with is forward Erik Lamela, although the Argentina international still has three years left to run on the six-year contract he signed when he arrived at the club from Roma in 2013.
