Tottenham Hotspur are set to lose top prospect Milos Veljkovic in January.

The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has been unable to agree a new contract this season and talks between player and club have completely broken down. With his current deal expiring at the end of this season, when he could leave for free, he is set to be sold when the window re-opens, with the strongest interest so far coming from the Bundesliga and the Serbian league.

Veljkovic, who has made three first-team appearances for Spurs, was part of the Serbia team which won the Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand last summer, where he played at centre-back. He hoped to win a lucrative new deal and more first-team opportunities when he returned, but neither was forthcoming.

After brief loans at Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic last season, Velkjovic wanted this to be his breakthrough year into first-team football. He was set to join a Championship side on loan if he could agree a new deal, but he did not.

“I want to play in the best league in the world,” Velkjovic told The Independent in August, in his first major newspaper interview. “This year, I just want to get more experience, more games in the Championship or abroad. At international level I have done well. Now I need to make the next step at club level.”

That next step will now be away from White Hart Lane.
