Barcelona midfielder Xavi has put Europe's elite clubs on alert after raising doubts over his chances of ending his career at the Nou Camp.

Although the 33-year-old insists that he would prefer to play out his days with the Catalans, the Spaniard is sceptical whether he'll still be good enough for the La Liga champions once his contract expires in 2016.

Xavi has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Bayern Munich in recent months.

Having already made twenty-two appearances for Barca this season, however, he remains a vital part of Gerardo Martino's plans for the time being.

He said: "It's difficult to finish your career here, I don't know if I will end it at Barca. I'd like to, but I don't know what will happen.

"I feel good physically, better even than in the last two seasons. I don't want to miss any games and sometimes that can affect you. I have to give myself a little bit more rest now.

"I am happy playing for Barca because of our philosophy. Perhaps I could have been happy playing for another club, I don't know, but my priority has always been Barca."

After making 130 international appearances for his country, his illustrious career is nearing its conclusion and Xavi is also considering a move into coaching.

"I don't know if I will be a coach because I am still playing and I haven't stopped to think about it yet," he added. "But I like football a lot and I will stay linked to it. What on earth would I do otherwise - become an economist?"
